AFI Film Poster

The Grapes of Wrath documents a huge time period in American history, and communicates the wonder of grit, perseverance, family ties, and the beginning of a lot of our stories.

I wanted the poster to respect the era in which the film came from—carry the same weight and significance—so I modeled it off of the hand bill that is used within the film. This hand bill is what sparks the family to pick up all they had and point their tires west for California in hopes for a better life. It is the reason there is any story in the first place. So just as this hand bill caused millions to flock to California, it could cause millions to flock to the theater. Lastly, I wanted the poster to look the farthest thing from clean, to communicate that there is a past behind here, a story of people who have lived through the dirt and the hard and what we might deem unlivable.
