Post & Parcel Monotype Printing

The push for this project was to explore both the exhilarating and the mundane; however one may interpret the two as conceding, star-crossing, or polarizing. Getting the mail could be one of the most mundane things ever, but I don’t see it that way. So I set off to evoke that colorful, warm, magical feeling that takes you over when you walk to the mailbox and pull out a letter in your hand. I wanted viewers to feel the nearness and the humanity of it; how each is on its own, one never the same. This exactly parallels with monotype printing, because “monotype” means exactly and only one, and this specific process within printmaking, means printing from things. So everything you see in these pieces are physical objects that I inked up and individually ran through a press smushed between two sheets of plexiglass, some objects shown below.

Evening Machines Screen Print

This print was screen printed in tribute to one of my favorite musicians and singer-songwriters, Gregory Alan Isakov. His most recent album, Evening Machines, was created during the evenings after long days spent working on his farm. He noted he was often basked in the light from his VU meter and other recording equipment during the nights. Because of these details mentioned in his artist statement, the overall design of the print includes an old school VU Meter, carrots and flowers grown on his farm, and other recording equipment. There are three separate layers to this print, the black being the first, then the blue, and then the dusty pink plaid overlay.
